Hurricane/ Alcatrazz House of Blues July 2, 2011

More than anything, I went to this concert to see Alcatrazz. They weren’t the headliner. I love all the music Alcatrazz has ever done. Graham Bonnet is one of my favorite singers. I made the trip on 4th of July weekend to watch them play again since the sound was so horrible at the Ventura Theater in January.   They had Y&T’s drummer (Mike Vanderhule) since Glen Sobel is touring with Alice Cooper. I think this was a one-off performance for him with the band. It was cool watching him sightread some of the music.    The band sounded good and Howie Simon played really well.  He’s one of the best shredders out there.    Venue-wise, Alcatrazz sounded pretty good- much better than the sound in January, although they technically played a better show last time.   It was still very much worth attending.

I hung around for Hurricane. I’d seen them twice at the Country Club in Reseda in the late 80s and early 90s. There was a group of absolute die-hards there for the show. They were amusing. They really enjoyed themselves.  I got as spot on the stage and was a little too close to the monitors and all the excited people that kept spilling beer on me.    Andrew Freeman was the singer.   He did a good job, but it was somewhat of an adjustment hearing the songs without Kelly singing them.  Tony Cavazo is an excellent bass player.   He had that place rumbling.   Robert Sarzo is a total rock star.   He was all decked out and shredding on his assortment of awesome guitars- that guy has always had the cool axes.     Mike Hansen was the drummer.   He rocks.   I’m glad I went and it brought me back to memories of a better musical time, but  I can’t lie, though my three favorite members of Hurricane past were Kelly Hansen, Doug Aldrich and Jay Schellen.
