Leon Russell The Canyon Club 10/20/2011

On the way home from the taping of TMS, we stopped in Agoura for a quick bite and a few beers to recall such a fun-filled day.   Even though it wasn’t a very “metal” way to end the evening, we then popped into the Canyon for a while to check out Leon Russell.   I remember my parents having Leon Russell LPs back in the 70s, but I couldn’t name one of his songs to save my life.   Upon entering, the place was packed and completely rocking.   It turns out I knew just about every song he played- even the words.   His entire band totally rocked- that was a truly commanding performance.   We were laughing because he’s so white that it’s kind of hard to photograph him.   I really envy his beard.   We thoroughly enjoyed about 45 minutes of his set before having to head home to our respective families.    This was easily one of the better shows I’ve seen this year.   Next time he comes around, I’ll make sure I can stay for the entire concert…  And now I am really regretting not making more of an effort to see him when he was touring with Elton John.   Oops.  Again, not a metal show at all (which should be all but mandatory after seeing a taping of TMS), but good music is good music and this was nothing short of perfect for me.
