Steel Panther (my 69th Show of the Year!) House of Blues Sunset 11/28/2011

My wife woke me up from a deep sleep around 9:45 tonight and asked me if I had a concert to go to. She was right- I sure did.  That was darn nice of her to encourage me to go rock out when I would have otherwise slept through the show.   I half-microwaved some some pizza, grabbed a coffee, stopped at the ATM, gassed up the ride and made it to the venue just after 11:00, where I paid to park and headed towards the show.

I listened to the new Steel Panther album on the way there.  I am digging it.    I’ve given it about 5 listens and it gets better each time. The lyrics are great and the tunes are really catchy….

I bought a comp ticket from some dude out front for $10 and headed in. I noticed that it was pretty empty for a Steel Panther show- I figured it would be close to capacity with a new album and their growing popularity. I guess not on this evening, which was fine with me. I was shocked I was able to make it with such little planning. After getting my bearings inside, checking my phone real quick, finding my "spot" for the show and eating the pizza crust I stuck in my pocket that I meant to eat on the walk to the HOB, the band started with a Motley Crue song. They play Crue better than Crue does.  They also played a Def Leppard song…. better than Def Leppard can play it.  I was really hoping they’d run through the entire new album, but they played a few tunes off the first record, the ones you’d expect them to play off the new one and their usually mix of Van Halen and other 80s-type rock and metal.      Unless they are sabotaged by bad live sound engineering, I can’t see how they won’t completely upstage the headliners (Def Leppard and Motely Crue) in their upcoming tour in England.

New Tune

It was a pretty  typical set that was a little too heavy on the Bon Jovi tunes, but I’ve come to expect that.   And they do good version so them and throw in obscene lyrics, so no problems there…  As always, there was plenty of humor in between the songs and there was the trademark shredding guitar solo.    I’ve seen them 17 times and I never get bored of their playing or their antics.   Their shows are very therapeutic, vulgar, crude, rude, and hysterical with great music- what more could you ask for in a show?

Monster Ballad!

Satchel insulting the security guard:

There was an obvious drop in the quality of women in attendance that danced on stage, but they were enjoying themselves and I guess that’s what counts.

There were a few celebs in attendance- Kat Von D and her posse was there.

I spotted “Rooftop” with them at the end of the show (wearing the green hat on the right).

There was also a famous musician guy in the VIP section that seemed really nice, but I can’t remember who he is…

They did a Journey song with Kevin Farley, who is the brother of Chris Farley.   He looked just like him.

And just like that, the curtain closed and that was it for the show.

I ran upstairs to the Foundation Room.   Since I didn’t have anyone to hang out with, I took a few pictures and drove home.   It was a 4 hour trip in total.   Time well spent!

Foundation Room (I sat in this room by myself for a few minutes, looked around a bit and let someone else enjoy it instead….
